Philosophy
As an educator I believe that the events and activities that take place in my classroom are my responsibility. I hold myself accountable for providing a thriving, positive learning environment where my students can gain an awareness of themselves and the environment around them in addition to a sufficient understanding of fine arts, and art history. I believe that all students want to gain artistic knowledge, but they may not yet know that they are capable of doing so. I will provide challenges that show students of every learning ability, culture, and socioeconomic background that they can succeed. Due to the understanding that I am accountable for the actions of my students I hold them to high moral standards. My students will be held responsible and will accept the consequences of their actions of their choosing.
Rules and Routines
The rules and routines that take place in my classroom are focused around the safety of my students. The rules that I hold my students responsible for knowing are 1. To follow instruction the first time that they are given. 2. Be respectful to your classmates and authority figures. 3. Treat others in a kindly fashion. 4. Return objects to their homes. 5. Remain in your spot unless given permission to move about the classroom.
When my students come to my classroom, I greet them as they enter. They know to get their assigned supplies baskets and go to their assigned location. They then get out their sketchbooks and start on their sketchbook assignments. This time allows me to take attendance, prevents chaos, and provides a transition from their previous activities to the lesson that will be taken place during that day. There are many other routines that take place within my class that have to do with how to use and store different art projects and materials. When leaving my class my students know that they are responsible for their environment and must clean the classroom, replace supplies, and put objects back into their home location. They will then gather their things push in their chairs and line up and await the arrival of their homeroom teacher.
Behavior Management
As the leader of my classroom and the individual responsible for the wellbeing of my students, I find it of great importance to provide a safe learning environment. To do this behavior management is a necessity. I believe that in order to prevent as many disruptions as possible I must hold clear expectations for the behavior of my students. I believe in providing an environment where students are encouraged to stand and wiggle around while working on their art. However, they must stay in their designated location marked by masking tape and cannot disrupt the work of other students. I prevent disruptions and behavior problems and hold students accountable for their actions, by maintaining a consistent disciplinary system. I understand that my students should be treated with respect and need to be self aware of their choices and the consequences of their actions. To enforce this philosophy, if a student is doing something that I believe they should not do I first ask them what they are doing and why. I also ask them what they should be doing and give them an opportunity to correct their actions. If misbehavior continues I engage in a conversation where the student contributes the decision of an appropriate consequence for their action. I am aware that extreme events require immediate action and those situations will be handled accordingly. My behavior management prevents the shaming and embarrassment of students. Instead I show the students how their actions are affecting others and show them the importance of taking responsibility for their individual choices. By creating this healthy and safe environment my students feel confident learning about art, themselves, and the world around them.

When my students come to my classroom, I greet them as they enter. They know to enter the classroom on time and begin working immediately by getting their necessary supplies out and begin working on their bell ringer sketchbook assignment. This time allows me to take attendance, prevents chaos, and provides a transition from their previous activities to the lesson that will be taken place during that day. There are many other routines that take place within my class that have to do with how to use and store different art projects and materials. When leaving my class my students know that they are responsible for their environment and must clean the classroom, replace supplies, and put objects back into their designated location. They will then gather their things and wait for my dismissal. They know that the school bell is but a reminder to me and does not give them permission to leave the room without my dismissal.
