As an art teacher, I aim to show students that the objectives they are being taught in school are not limited to the desks in which they sit, but instead can be experienced through the exploration of art. In my classroom students will learn how to deal with the emotions that they are discovering at an important developmental time in their lives. My students will gain valuable life skills such as critical thinking, observation, problem solving, teamwork, and self-recognition.
As an educator I find great value in improving students knowledge of the basic art principles and techniques so that they will have command over the materials that they choose to use while expressing themselves. These elements will be an active part of the learning environment but not the only focus within the curriculum. The students will learn these aspects of art while exploring new mediums, and a deeper personal relationship with their art works.
I find high importance in teaching the students how to use art to express themselves, and find ways to connect to the background from which they come. It is impossible for one to see the world exactly as another individual sees the world, but through art it is possible for others to gain a better understanding of how different artists understand specific aspects of life. Diversity is highly celebrated in the arts, my students will be regularly challenged to make their art personal and demonstrate their understanding of the world around them. My students will be encouraged to search and discover what makes them unique, and in that process they will find ways to appreciate the differences between all cultures and backgrounds.
In my curriculum I also incorporate History, Science, English and Math into art projects. I believe that while art, in and of its self, is an extremely valuable and important subject; however, art can and should be used to assist students to build connections between subjects and challenge them in new ways. Therefore, I challenge students to explore the objectives they are being taught in other areas of their academic career.
After projects are completed, I will encourage and guide my students to find ways to articulate their expressions, build self-confidence, and voice their opinions. The students will improve upon their listening skills, and take other perspectives into consideration through the practice of art critiques. This activity provides a positive opportunity for students to openly discuss their view of their art and their classmates’ art works. By providing a positive environment for students to openly talk they will gain the ability to further celebrate the diversities among them. For younger students critiques are a chance to display work and talk about what they made. This opportunity allows students to build self-confidence as they are being lifted up in a positive and encouraging way.

Students gain positive life skills, celebrate other cultures, build connections between subjects, and discover how to express themselves while taking other views into consideration. As an artist I understand first hand the benefits of the arts, and I intend to show my students the many ways that the arts can help them throughout their lives.
